Planting Question Peanut Notes No. 54 2026

Toamto spotted wilt in the peanut canopy at mid-season

Question:

Despite the dry conditions we have beds that are 2 weeks old that have at least 50 percent soil moisture within 1 inch of the surface and 60 degrees by 10 am.

If the weather doesn't change and soil moisture remains at a reasonable level, we are considering planting peanuts the last week of April. Do you have any concerns?

Jordan:

That should be okay. However, our data shows that mid-May planting provides our most consistent yields, but planting in late April/early May does okay. I would plant to moisture, and you can go to a depth of 3 inches. I would be ready with a foliar spray of Hemi plus nonionic surfactant soon after peanuts emerge. Thrips and tomato spotted wilt are always higher risk when planting early.
