Salt Issues in Peanuts Peanut Notes No. 32 2023

(Updated: March 22, 2023, 7:55 a.m.)

This past summer we had drought in several areas of the peanut belt in North Carolina. In some cases, farmers used irrigation water that ultimately injured peanut because of salt levels. It was a challenging time given spider mite outbreaks and trying to get as much out of the peanut crop as possible under very dry conditions. There was concern that the salt applied through irrigation was building up in soil at levels that were high enough to cause damage to crops planted in 2023. One of the NC State Extension agents samples several fields to see if salt levels were high enough to injure to crops. In those fields, there were no levels of salts that would injure crops planted this spring. We were fortunate to have had significant rain in the fall and winter to move salts through the soil profile.
