Question:
What’s your thoughts on spraying clethodim (16 oz.), Cobra, Basagran, Pursuit (2 oz. for cotton rotation), and Zidua as a tank mix? Have you ever used or had any problems with that mix?
Jordan:
I have never looked at that mixture. I don’t know for sure how it will work. Most likely there will be no major issues but under these conditions (temperatures) there could be more injury. Clethodim needs crop oil concentrate. That increases injury potential. If you need to go in this direction, make sure you do a good job of agitation and getting everything in solution. You don’t want the components to settle out. Ugly. I think grass control will be marginal. Cobra, Basagran, and Pursuit can reduce grass control with clethodim. 16 oz might not be enough to overcome it. In a perfect world, spray clethodim and crop oil today and then a day or so later spray Cobra, Basagran, Pursuit, and Zidua with 80/20 surfactant at 1 quart per 100 gallons. But the world is not perfect for sure.
Follow-Up:
I think I may end up splitting it up and spraying the clethodim and crop oil separate from the other herbicides. I have some volunteer corn and Texas panicum getting pretty big and want to be sure to get a good kill on that, by itself. Do you think I should still spray 16 oz. or can I reduce that a little?
Jordan:
Stay with 16 oz. if the Texas panicum has any size on it. Those products (clethodim) are cheaper than they used to be. Also, it will help if you delay the broadleaf herbicides by just a day or so. Years ago, when weed scientists did a lot of tank-mix work, we found that 3 days before (with the clethodim) gave the best results. But if you can only wait a day, the 16 oz. really helps.
The broadleaf weeds get so much larger in 3 days, especially Palmer amaranth.
Follow-Up:
I will spray clethodim tomorrow and give it a day or two before I spray everything else.
