Treating Insects versus Insect Damage Peanut Notes No. 109 2023

(Updated: June 16, 2023, 6:06 a.m.)

As we move through June and approach July, we need to make sure when we apply insecticide the insects are still active. It is possible that plants will express injury from feeding insects earlier in the season but the insect population has crashed. At this point in the season, this would apply to thrips damage and possibly potato leaf hopper burn. The reason to make sure insect pests are present and active, and that we are not treating the injury in absence of active insects, is because the insecticide could induce a secondary pest outbreak. We are beginning to get dry across the region and insecticides like acephate for thrips and pyrethroids for leaf hoppers could flare mites.
