Question:
Dr. Jordan, the main pegs on both our Virginia and Runner type peanuts have fewer nodules than normal. Right now they don't have a yellow cast however, I'm concerned that the plant and peanut development will slow down in the future. We are pulling tissue samples at least once a month for the last month. Some are showing low Nitrogen amounts. The vines just have peanuts at the main pegs at this point. Would an application of Ammonium Sulfate benefit at this point? Thank you.
Jordan:
It would not hurt. But I don't know that it will help. 15 nodules on the tap root at 45 days after plant is the tipping point. N is expensive. As long as they are green N should not be an issue. But if it is stressful, 300 pounds of AMS would be a sure thing. It has been a challenging year with quite a few yellow to pale green peanuts around.
Assume you meant roots and not pegs. Pegs will not have nodules.
